A promotion is a different job, not only a reward for the one you already do. Before accepting, find out what you would stop doing, what you would take on and what support comes with it.

Read the role behind the title
Ask for clear answers about:
- The tasks and people you would be responsible for.
- The decisions you could make yourself.
- The pay, hours and expectations.
- Training, staffing and support.
- How success would be judged.
More responsibility without authority can leave you accountable for problems you cannot fix. A title change without a clear role is worth questioning.
Example: skill does not equal preference
You may be excellent at specialist work and dislike the idea of managing a team. Ask whether a senior specialist path exists. Being good at your current job does not oblige you to choose management as the next step.
Compare the daily reality
Speak to someone doing similar work. Ask what a normal week includes, including difficult conversations and administration. If a trial or shadowing period is possible, agree on its terms before it begins.
