Why do I always work too much?

The short answer

Working too much can come from too many tasks, unclear expectations, financial pressure or a habit of saying yes. Start by separating the amount of work required from the extra work you feel compelled to add.

Find where the hours go

For a few ordinary days, record your start and finish times and the tasks that extend the day. Note whether the extra work was requested, assumed or added by you.

Look for unclear rules. Who decides what is urgent? What happens when two deadlines conflict? Does being reliable mean being available at every hour? If the workload cannot fit into the available time, a personal productivity trick is not enough.

Example: make the trade-off visible

When someone adds a task, try: “I can finish this by Thursday, or keep the current deadline for the other project. Which should come first?” This asks the person assigning work to help choose, instead of leaving you to absorb both demands.

Set one limit you can check

Choose a specific limit, such as a finish time or one agreed priority list. Tell the relevant person and review what happens. If the workplace ignores reasonable limits, seek appropriate support.

Astrofluence can prompt reflection on routine and responsibility. It cannot diagnose compulsive behaviour or solve unsafe work demands. Persistent distress or exhaustion is a reason to consider professional support, not work harder.
