What do elements and sign groups mean?
The short answer
Elements and sign groups are two traditional ways of organizing the twelve zodiac signs. Elements describe broad themes; the three sign groups describe starting, maintaining, or changing. They are not personality tests, measures of ability, or instructions for choosing a career.

The four elements
- Fire: Aries, Leo, Sagittarius. Use the theme of initiative to ask what needs a first attempt.
- Earth: Taurus, Virgo, Capricorn. Use the theme of practical work to ask what would make an idea usable.
- Air: Gemini, Libra, Aquarius. Use the theme of thought and exchange to ask what needs discussion.
- Water: Cancer, Scorpio, Pisces. Use the theme of feeling and context to ask how people experience the work.
Someone can initiate, organize, explain, and care regardless of their signs. Do not use these groups to decide whether a colleague is rational, reliable, or emotional.
The three ways of working
- Cardinal: Aries, Cancer, Libra, Capricorn. The traditional theme is beginning.
- Fixed: Taurus, Leo, Scorpio, Aquarius. The traditional theme is maintaining.
- Mutable: Gemini, Virgo, Sagittarius, Pisces. The traditional theme is adapting.
Every sign belongs to one element and one of these groups. Taurus, for example, is earth and fixed. A whole birth chart includes more than your Sun sign, so one label cannot summarize it.
Example
A project may need someone to propose a first version, someone to maintain a repeatable process, and someone to adjust it after feedback. These are jobs to share, not roles assigned by birth signs. One person may do all three at different stages.
