Why do I keep saying yes at work?

The short answer

Saying yes quickly can protect you from an awkward moment while creating a harder week. You may want to help, fear disappointing someone or be unsure what you are allowed to refuse. Notice the reason without treating every request as your responsibility.

Put a pause before the promise

You can say, “Let me check my current work and come back to you.” Then ask what is needed, by when, and what should move if you accept.

Check the cost to your calendar. A short task may also need preparation, follow-up or a meeting. An agreeable answer is not useful if it creates a promise you cannot keep.

Example: offer a real limit

Instead of accepting the whole task, try: “I can review one page by Friday, but I cannot rewrite the full document this week.” A limited yes can be helpful when it is honest. You do not need to offer an alternative you cannot sustain.

Notice which requests repeat

Keep a short record of requests that regularly displace your main work. Discuss priorities with the person who assigns them. If refusing reasonable requests for extra work leads to threats or unfair treatment, seek appropriate support.
