Why do I lose interest in work so quickly?

The short answer

Interest can fade for several reasons. The work may become repetitive, the role may differ from the promise, or you may enjoy starting more than maintaining. Identify when the change happens before deciding you need another career.

Notice what changed

Think about your last project or role. What held your attention at first? What are you doing now? Did the work become familiar, did the purpose become unclear, or did interruptions leave little time for the part you liked?

Also notice whether the loss of interest is limited to one task or appears across your life. Persistent changes in enjoyment or wellbeing may be worth discussing with a qualified health professional.

Example: more administration after a promotion

You enjoyed making things, then a promotion added scheduling and approvals. The problem may be the new task mix, not an inability to commit. Ask whether some hands-on work can remain part of the role.

Test a small adjustment

Choose one change: a clearer finish line, a new skill, a different task mix or less interruption. Agree on a short period to try it, then compare your experience. Not every dull task needs to disappear, but a role should not rely only on the excitement of beginning.
